Arashiyama

The Sagano bamboo path runs north from beside Tenryu-ji's north gate to the Okochi Sanso villa — a walk of about four minutes at a normal pace. There is no entrance, no ticket, no opening time and no closing time. Nothing about it is managed, which is exactly why the time of day matters more here than anywhere else in Kyoto.

Before 08:00 the path is quiet enough to hear the stems knocking together in the wind, which is the point of the place and the reason it was named one of Japan's hundred soundscapes. From about 09:30 it fills, and from 10:00 to 16:00 in any month with decent weather it is a single-file procession with people stopping to photograph each other. The bamboo does not change; the experience is entirely a function of the clock.

• Worst: 10:00 to 15:00 in April, October and November
• December illumination: the Hanatouro lantern event has not run in recent years — check locally rather than planning around it

Okochi Sanso, at the end of the path

The villa of the silent-film actor Denjiro Okochi sits at the north end of the grove: a hillside garden with a view over the city, and an entrance fee that includes matcha and a sweet in the tea house. It is the single most reliable way to be alone in Arashiyama at eleven in the morning, because the crowd walks to the end of the bamboo, turns around and walks back.

Coming from the Randen or JR station, the sequence that works is: grove first while it is early, then Tenryu-ji when it opens at 08:30, then down to the Togetsukyo bridge and the river, then either the monkeys or lunch. Doing it backwards means reaching the bamboo at eleven, which is the mistake that generates the disappointed reviews.

The monkey park is the one gap in this table we cannot fill. Its own domain served an expired certificate and a hosting default page when we checked on 30 August 2026, so there is no official figure to print; the guided options above that include entry are currently the only sourced way to price it.

The Hozugawa river boat starts at Kameoka, upstream, and comes down about sixteen kilometres of gorge to the Togetsukyo bridge in roughly two hours, poled and steered by three boatmen. Adults pay $37.5 (¥6,000), children up to elementary age $28.13 (¥4,500), groups of 25 or more $33.75 (¥5,400) a head, and a private boat is $900 (¥144,000). The regular timetable runs from 10 March to 13 December, with a reduced winter service from 8 December to 9 March. Those are the operator's own figures, read on 30 August 2026.

The Sagano Romantic Train is the other half of the classic pairing: an open-sided sightseeing train that runs the same valley from Saga to Kameoka in about 25 minutes. Its fare pages returned a server error when we checked, so we print no figure — the operator sells tickets by QR code and at its own stations, and a new fleet is announced for spring 2027.

The usual combination is train up, boat down, which puts you back at the bridge in Arashiyama with the afternoon ahead of you. Rafting is a third option on the same water and a different sport: three and a half hours, wetsuits, and cancelled when the river runs high.

Journey times below are the operators' own timetables and the walking figures are ours, measured from each station gate to the southern end of the bamboo path. The line you choose decides where in the district you start, which matters more here than the few minutes between them.

The JR line is the fastest from Kyoto Station and the only one that gets you here before 08:00 without effort. The $6.88 (¥1,100) Subway & Bus day pass does not cover JR, so on an Arashiyama day the arithmetic changes: pay the train fare, and buy the pass only if the rest of the day is buses.

Arashiyama and the eastern temples are on opposite sides of the city and about fifty minutes apart by bus in the traffic of the hour everyone travels. Putting them in the same day is the most common way visitors lose an afternoon here. The shape that works is a western morning — grove at 07:30, Tenryu-ji at opening, the bridge, lunch by the river — and a central or northern afternoon reached by JR rather than bus.

That is how the two-day itinerary uses it, with the eastern chain on the other day.
